Collin Whites received his teaching credential in Secondary Mathematics (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus) from Cal State University, Fullerton. He has worked as a Teacher and Tutor for the past 8 years. In that time Mr. Whites has been employed by Austin Community College, Orange Unified as well as Austin ISD. He has also tutored honors and AP students from McNeil and Anderson High Schools, as well as UT and Texas State students.
His goal as a teacher is instill courage by building mathematical confidence and competence. He believes in building student understanding by teaching them how to detangle math problems (What information are you given? What do you know? How do you solve the problem? How do you check your answer?). He also believes in teaching through multiple modes (lecture, visual representation, demonstration of understanding/informal assessment thru student class activities) and using technology such as graphing calculators to learning faster, more certain and less tedious.
Mr. Whites enjoys storytelling and this is part of how he interacts with younger students. Because of his years teaching, Collin is a perceptive teacher. His student-centered activities help him to identify and remedy student difficulties. A favorite quote of his is that "Man lives by good example."
